If you read our blog, you now know that building software is no piece of cake (it's actually a piece of lasagna). Now it's time to introduce you to one of the chefs/developers behind Amilia's software. Meet Josh, one of our front-end developers!

Explain your job at Amilia

In general terms, I’m a “front-end developer” dealing with mostly how Amilia’s website, store, and administrative pages look and function for our customers. I use technology for your browser (like JavaScript) as well as for Amilia’s servers (like .NET and C#). You don’t have to know what they mean, but I have to know how they work together.

What’s the last thing you searched for on Google?

It was “copy one swatch to another document”. I’m very familiar with Photoshop, as a hobbyist photographer, but Adobe Illustrator is a different story. I had to find out how to take a document-specific set of color swatches and bring a few of them into a different art board. Google solved my problem lickety-split.

What’s one word you’re guilty of using too often?

I tend to get excited about many things, especially when others are talking about things they enjoy, so I’ll often say, “Spectacular!” It’s a great word, but I definitely say it too often. For example, I’d wager that if someone goes skydiving for their first time, it’s spectacular. Perhaps not so much when they ate Cheerios for breakfast this morning.

Pick one: Kittens or puppies?

I have a dog and three cats, so this seems particularly cruel. I can’t pick only one, so I say I’d secretly take both and have fun with them out on my farm for animals put into unfair questions.

Pick one: Bacon or Nutella?

Nutella! Not only because I’m vegetarian, but also because I have a gigantic sweet tooth. Although, now I’m considering what Nutella-bacon would taste like, and I’m frightened at the possibility that it would be incomparably delicious.

What is your TV guilty pleasure?

Isn’t most television a guilty pleasure? However, I suppose if it were something I’d rather not admit to many others that I watch, it would be Friends. It’s been off the air for over a decade, but I still can’t get enough of the show.

What’s your favorite app?

It might sound weird, but my favorite app is probably Google Maps. Even as a kid, I loved studying maps, planning routes, and even learning areas that I have never been to. Back then, it was all with road atlases and travel maps. Now, nearly the entire world is available, with street-view pictures, at my fingertips on my phone. It’s very addictive to pick a random location, zoom in, and start having fun.

What is the best part about your job at Amilia?

Being able to work in an open and flexible atmosphere. We have lots of natural light and space to move around, as well as hours that can be adjusted as needed to fit around life events and unforeseen circumstances. It makes for a very low-stress working environment.

What is your favorite Amilia feature?

I love that Amilia now offers the ability to run fundraising campaigns! They are completely customizable with images, descriptions, and percentage- or amount-based goals and progress notifications. I helped write it, so obviously it’s one of my favorite features.

Why should organizations use Amilia?

Organizations should use Amilia because they want to keep their workflows simple and organized, while offering their customers a great experience with registrations, payments, and product & membership purchases!
